Scientific Director
Dr Steven Fleming BSc (Hons) MSc PhD has a wealth of experience in the area of Assisted Reproduction. From 1998-2008, he was the Scientific Director of Westmead Fertility Centre at Westmead Hospital in Sydney. Other positions he has held include Senior Lecturer in Reproductive Medicine at the University of Sydney, Visiting Professor at the University of Ulster, and Lecturer in Obstetrics & Gynaecology at the University of Nottingham, where he established the world’s first Master’s degree in Assisted Reproduction Technology (ART) with Dr Simon Fishel. He is involved in the accreditation of IVF centres throughout Australia and has acted as a consultant to centres in Egypt, Greece, Israel, Jordan, Malaysia and Thailand. In addition Dr Fleming has been extensively involved in IVF research, specifically into sperm preparation techniques, egg maturation, early embryo development and implantation, as a means to improve fertility treatments in the future. In this capacity, he has been the recipient of research grants from the Fertility Society of Australia and the National Health & Medical Research Council, and has supervised scientists obtaining their PhD in embryology and reproductive biology. Dr Fleming is the author of a book plus numerous book chapters and journal articles, and has received invitations to speak at and chair sessions at national and international conferences. He is committed to quality management in the IVF laboratory and strives to optimise conditions for fertilisation and safe embryo culture in the laboratory setting. Dr Fleming is delighted to have a purpose built state-of-the-art laboratory to assist couples in their endeavours to have a healthy family.

Senior Embryologist
Dr Vi-Khiem Hua BSc (Hons) PhD graduated from the University of Wollongong in 2000. Since 2001, he has divided his time between clinical training as an embryologist at Westmead Fertility Centre and completing a PhD in reproductive medicine within the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at The University of Sydney. Dr Hua is an experienced embryologist, trained in many aspects of ART including: semen analysis and sperm preparation, intrauterine insemination (IUI), in vitro fertilisation (IVF), intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and freezing of ovarian tissue (for those patients undergoing cancer treatment and wishing to maintain their fertility). In his PhD, Dr Hua investigated the role of ovarian hormones (inhibin and activin) secreted during ovulation and his current research interests include egg maturation, ovarian follicle development and ovarian tissue cryopreservation. Dr Hua is an active member of the Fertility Society of Australia (FSA) and its scientific arm, Scientists in Reproductive Technology (SIRT).
